The Best Summer Getaways Near Chicago

By Laura Slowick | May 14, 2019

No matter how busy your summer schedule looks at the moment, you can probably squeeze in a little time for a relaxing getaway.  Forget about buying plane tickets or spending long hours in the car. These three getaways are just a few hours from Chicago.

Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin

Elkhart Lake is an excellent choice for a laidback vacation. Located three hours from the North Shore, the spring-fed lake offers enough activities to keep you busy for a long weekend or a week. Rent a pontoon boat for the day and explore the lake, sign up for a wake boarding lesson, or relax on the beach with that book you’ve been meaning to read all summer. Land-based activities include golf, horseback riding, hiking, fishing, shopping and foot golf, a sport that requires players to kick a soccer ball into goals on each hole.

The best getaway destinations offer accommodations with plenty of space to spread out. The lakeside  Osthoff Resort features 245 suites with fireplaces and balconies, a private beach on the lake, indoor and outdoor pools, watersports, spa treatments, two restaurants, cooking lessons, children’s programming, tennis and volleyball.

Springfield, Illinois

Was the last time you visited the state capital during a school field trip? Abraham Lincoln may have been the focus of your trip then, but Springfield is also known for a variety of activities and events that have nothing to do with Illinois’ most famous citizen. Visit the Air Combat Museum, saddle up for a horseback ride along the Sangamon River, or enjoy a musical or play during your stay.

If you’re in town August 8 – 18, add a stop at the Illinois State Fair to your itinerary. This year’s entertainment lineup includes performances by Megadeth, Bad Company, Why Don’t We, Pentatonix, Snoop Dogg and Friends, and Reba McEntire.

Hotel Vandivort in the ideal place to stay if you’ll be spending a lot of time in downtown Springfield. Housed in a former Masonic Temple, the boutique hotel offers comfortable rooms with luxurious bedding, walk-in showers, and a lively bar and restaurant.

Chesterton, Indiana

Located at the southern end of Lake Michigan, Chesterton provides a different vantage point for your favorite lake. While you’re in town, spend an afternoon swimming, boating or fishing at Indiana Dunes National Park, or play a few rounds of golf at Sand Creek Country Club. Chesterton’s commercial district is home to a variety of antique stores, art galleries and a history museum.

Although there are several hotels in the area, the Dunes Walk Inn is the best choice if you’re looking for a little pampering during your stay. The restored 19th century mansion offers five rooms and suites with  hardwood floors, custom millwork and other authentic touches. You’ll enjoy 360 degree views from the top-floor Beverly Shores suite. Featuring luxurious linens, a whirlpool bath, fireplace and a kitchenette, the large suite is the perfect setting for a romantic getaway or a family vacation.
