From Outdated to Tranquil Retreat: A Complete Bathroom Transformation

By Bryan Slowick | May 17, 2026

When a bathroom begins to suffer from ongoing maintenance issues, outdated design, and poor functionality, it can quickly become a space homeowners avoid rather than enjoy. That was exactly the case with our recent Buffalo Grove bathroom renovation project. What was once an underutilized room plagued by a persistent shower leak and aging features has now been transformed by our BDS team into a serene, sophisticated retreat designed for everyday comfort.

For years, this bathroom struggled with recurring maintenance concerns, including a shower leak that made the space increasingly impractical. Over time, these issues led the homeowners to use the bathroom less and less, until it became clear that a full renovation was the best path forward.

Beyond the maintenance problems, the existing layout presented several design challenges:

  • An oversized, outdated tub that overwhelmed the space
  • Unsafe step-up access to the tub
  • Aging finishes and fixtures that no longer matched the homeowners’ style
  • Inefficient use of square footage
  • Limited functional storage

The bathroom no longer supported the homeowners’ needs for safety, comfort, or aesthetics.

To truly solve the underlying issues and create a lasting transformation, BDS began this renovation by taking the bathroom down to the studs. This full gut approach allowed for a completely fresh start, addressing hidden problems while opening the door for a more efficient layout. By rebuilding from the ground up, the BDS team was able to customize every detail to improve both form and function.

One of the most impactful changes in this renovation was the complete reworking of the bathroom’s layout. This new layout included:

Enlarged Shower

The new shower was expanded to create a more spacious, luxurious feel while improving usability. This larger footprint not only enhances comfort but also modernizes the overall design.

Proportionate Tub Design

The previous oversized tub was replaced with a tub that better fits the room’s dimensions, creating visual balance and improving accessibility. By minimizing the tub deck, the design also freed up valuable space and reduced unnecessary bulk.

Enhanced Safety

Removing the dangerous step-up access was a major priority, resulting in a safer, more user-friendly environment.

Smart Storage Solutions with Custom Niches

Storage played a key role in elevating the functionality of this bathroom. Custom niches were strategically integrated throughout the shower and bath areas, providing convenient, built-in storage without sacrificing style.

Our BDS team knows bathroom renovation is about more than fixing problems—it’s about creating a space that feels personal and inspiring. To achieve this, every finish and fixture was carefully updated to reflect the homeowners’ current aesthetic. Modern materials, refined textures, and updated fixtures replaced dated elements, creating a cohesive look that feels fresh, timeless, and elegant.

What was once an outdated, problematic bathroom has become a tranquil retreat that blends practicality with luxury. Through thoughtful design, strategic layout improvements, and personalized finishes, BDS was able to completely transform how the homeowners experience their space. This renovation project is a perfect example of how addressing both structural issues and design opportunities can turn an underperforming bathroom into one of the most beautiful and functional rooms in the home.

If your bathroom is suffering from outdated design, poor functionality, or long-term maintenance concerns, our BDS team would love the opportunity to help create a well-planned renovation that will do more than update the look—it can completely redefine how you live in your home.
