Reimagining This Libertyville Home's First Floor

By Bryan Slowick | Dec 11, 2024

When it comes to home design, creating a space that feels connected, functional, and welcoming is key for our BDS team. This Libertyville first-floor renovation project was a perfect example of reimagining a space to meet modern needs while maintaining a timeless aesthetic.

REMOVING A WALL TO OPEN UP THE SPACE

The original layout of the first floor presented a challenge. A wall with built-in cabinets separated the kitchen from the family room, making the homeowners feel disconnected from guests while they entertained. Though a handyman had cut a passthrough into the wall to improve sitelines, it still didn’t solve the issue, and the kitchen itself had remained untouched for over 20 years, further emphasizing the need for a complete overhaul. The dividing wall was found to be non-load-bearing but contained mechanicals from the second floor. The BDS team was able to go in and remove the wall entirely and cleverly concealed the mechanicals in two shallow pillars. This simple yet effective change opened up the space, creating a seamless flow between the kitchen and family room for our Libertyville homeowners.

CREATING A STUNNING KITCHEN

The heart of the transformation was truly found in the kitchen. The BDS team designed an incredible space featuring a striking contrast of white perimeter cabinets and a wood-tone island. The beautiful cabinetry was complemented by a unique leathered granite countertop for texture and elegance. The addition of the custom backsplash really makes the space stand out.
BDS reconfigured the layout for maximum functionality, including the removal of a pantry closet in favor of seamless stunning white cabinetry. A large island became the centerpiece of the kitchen, providing abundant prep space, seating, and a hub for gathering. The natural wood of the island provides the perfect contrast to the white cabinetry. A back door was also closed off in order to optimize the layout, while adding a window to maintain the natural light.

The BDS team designed a few standout features that were included in the updated kitchen:

  • A dry bar which was equipped with display cabinets, a wine fridge, and both under-cabinet and interior lighting. Not only does this feature create the perfect entertaining space, but it also adds a beautiful design feature.
  • Glass cabinet doors were also added to some of the cabinets. These allow our homeowners the opportunity to display some of their treasured items. Additional lighting helps to truly make these doors stand out.
  • A signature backsplash tile adds a bold focal point for this updated kitchen. This custom tile piece adds just the right amount of modern design to this kitchen remodel.

CREATING COHESION THROUGHOUT THE ENTIRE FIRST FLOOR

The remodel didn’t stop there. To ensure visual cohesion, the family room flooring was extended and blended with the rest of the first floor, which had been updated previously. The entire first floor was refinished for a consistent look, and the walls were repainted, brightening the dining room and giving the space a fresh, modern feel. Natural light was a key priority to keep the space feeling bright and updated. By removing heavy window treatments and adjusting ceiling lighting, the family room became brighter and more inviting. A new ceiling fan added both style and functionality.

CREATING A SPACE FOR FAMILY & FRIENDS

Our Libertyville homeowners now enjoy a space that’s perfect for entertaining and everyday living. The open layout, abundant natural light, and thoughtful details have transformed the first floor into a warm, inviting hub where family and friends naturally come together. This project is a testament to how reimagining a home’s layout can create a space that not only functions better but also feels like a true reflection of how the space was meant to be used.
