4 Ways to Make Your Home Worthy of a Staycation

By Laura Slowick | Jun 10, 2019

There’s no need to travel thousands of miles to enjoy a little rest and relaxation. Staycations offer all the benefits of a vacation without leaving home. Unfortunately, a vacation at home won’t feel like a holiday if your home is anything but luxurious. These four tips just may make your North Shore Chicago home feel more like your favorite resort or hotel.

Concentrate on Aesthetics

Hotel designers know that the appearance is just as important as function when it comes to creating resort rooms and suites. Although you could certainly be comfortable in a hotel room with bland walls and bedding, institutional carpeting and a basic bathroom, you probably wouldn’t spend more time than necessary in your depressing room.

Take your cue from designers and buy beautiful furnishings and materials that make you feel as if you’ve booked a stay in an upscale resort. Adding rich, vibrant colors to your walls and complement the colors with artwork, feature walls, plants and other accessories.

Do you have an amazing view of Lake Michigan? Make the view a focal point by installing large windows or adding floor-to-ceiling doors that fold back to create the ultimate indoor/outdoor entertaining space.

Upgrade your Master Bedroom Suite

Pamper yourself with a master bedroom suite makeover. Dress your bed in soft Egyptian cotton or linen sheets, plenty of pillows and a gorgeous duvet, quilt or bedspread. Have you been holding on to outdated or unattractive furniture because visitors never see your bedroom? Now’s the time to choose furniture you love, whether that’s antiques that complement your house’s architecture, brand new pieces or a mixture of both.

Bathrooms and closets in North Shore homes can be a little small for modern tastes. Fortunately, it’s easy to get the space you need with a complete remodel of your master bedroom suite. When you expand the space, consider adding a steam shower with WiFi settings, soaking tub, high-tech toilet with integrated bidet, furniture-quality vanity, fireplace, TV, wine chiller or radiant heat flooring.

Improve Your Outdoor Space

Lush flower beds, trees and shrubbery can transform an unexceptional backyard into a resort-worthy space. Landscaping not only enhances privacy but also creates a relaxing atmosphere. A few secluded sitting areas tucked away from the main entertaining spaces offer the ultimate in relaxation, especially when you add a few comfortable lounge chairs or a hammock.

Two-story decks, expansive patios and porches, fire pits, outdoor kitchens, fireplaces, TVs, smartphone controlled sound systems and outdoor patios can turn any backyard into the perfect staycation destination.

Add More Space

It’s difficult to relax if you just don’t have enough space in your home. Whether the problem is small rooms or an inefficient, outdated floor plan, a renovation project will finally give you the room you need. Your remodeling contractor can help you redesign your floor plan or create an addition that integrates seamlessly with the existing part of your home.

If your home doesn’t have enough room to spread out, consider enlarging or building a brand new family room, creating the ultimate chef’s kitchen, or building an entertainment space, complete with bar, movie theater and game room.
