There’s never been a better time to join a country club. While golf may have been the primary reason to join a country club in the past, many of today’s clubs also emphasize recreation, health, and fitness and wellness. If you’ve been considering club membership, you’ll want to investigate these four impressive Chicago area country clubs.
Skokie Country Club
Skokie Country Club members enjoy wine tastings, candlelit holiday meals, football-watching parties and happy hours at the pool, in addition to rounds of golf. Uneven lies, rolling terrain and fast greens are the hallmarks of the 18-hole course, which was renovated in 1999 to restore it to the original design created by Donald Ross in 1914. The championship-level course has hosted PGA tour events and a U.S. open.
The Skokie Country Club clubhouse offers plenty of large and small gathering spaces and an extensive fine dining menu in the dining room. Tennis, paddle tennis and the outdoor pool keep members busy during the warmer months of the year.
North Shore Country Club
Prestigious North Shore Country Club offers a challenging 18-hole golf course that that winds through 170 acres in Glenview. In the past, North Shore has hosted the 1933 U.S. Open, the Western Open, the U.S. Amateur and the Encompass Championship. Groundskeepers use environmentally friendly methods to maintain the course, including a sophisticated rainwater collection system for irrigation.
In addition to golf, other activities at the North Shore Country Club include tennis, platform (paddle) tennis and an outdoor swimming pool. During the summer months, the pool facility offers kids’ games, casual dining, swimming lessons, water aerobics and a children’s inter-club swim club. Members enjoy fine dining in the club’s well-appointed dining room and special member events throughout the year.
Staying in shape year-round is easy when you’re a member of Knollwood Country Club. During the spring and summer, members hit the links, tennis court or pool, while skeet shooting and cross country skiing keep them busy during the winter.
The H.S. Colt and C.H. Alison-designed 18-hole course has hosted several USGA and PGA events in the past. When they’re not playing golf, tennis or paddle tennis during the summer, members cool off at the large pool facility. Pool cabanas offer a shady spots to spend the day, while a summer pavilion dining facility offers light meals and snacks. Gourmet dining and social events make the clubhouse the place to be during evenings and weekends.
Ravinia Green Country Club
The lush 18-hole golf course may be the first thing you notice when arriving at Ravinia Green Country Club , but it’s far from the only recreational or fitness option available at the club. A new fitness center completed in October features cardio and weight rooms and group fitness classes. During the summer, the three outdoor pools (including an adults-only pool) are particularly popular with members.
The club also offers six tennis courts, a golf simulator, a putting green, a full-service golf shop and restaurant. Membership entitles you to reciprocal privileges at several other Chicago-area clubs that are part of the ClubCorp family.
