10 Design Trends That Will Improve Your Home

Written by Bryan Slowick | Jan 21, 2016

A new year is a fresh start. Is a home improvement project on your to-do list?

If you’re ready to update your home, but don’t know where to start, we’re here to help. Think of us as the personal trainers of the design-build industry. We will work with you to make your goals a reality!

What home design trends will last through and well past 2016?

Our in house design team discusses ten of the hottest design trends for your home.

1. Open Floor Plans. Homes with open floor plans will continue to be popular in 2016. The lack of dividing walls makes the kitchen-living space feel larger.

2. Hardworking Kitchen Islands. The cornerstone of the open layout is a kitchen island. An island enhances style and serves many functions: food prep, storage, gathering place, and dining spot.

3. White or Gray Cabinetry. White is the most popular color for kitchen cabinets followed by gray. They brighten up the space and provide a neutral backdrop for accents.

4. Deep Drawers. A top priority during a remodel is storage. To keep clutter out of sight, there’s a custom cabinet, divider or insert for almost any item in your home.

5. Quartz countertops. Engineered stone surfaces continue to be the top choice for countertops. Quartz has a luxurious appearance, is durable and doesn't need to be sealed like natural stone.

6. Luxury Appliances. Innovative products make your life easier. Many homeowners want the convenience of controlling their appliances by smartphone, tablet or remote.

7. Wood Flooring. Wood floors will forever be a design classic; they lend a warm and inviting feel to your home. Hardwood floors have overtaken tile as the most popular type of kitchen flooring.

8. Entryway Bench. Welcome guests into your home—and encourage them to remove their dirty shoes—by adding entryway seating to your mudroom.

9. No-Threshold Showers. As more homeowners prepare to age in place or live with elderly relatives, curbless showers are a practical necessity.

10. Well-lit Bathrooms. Homeowners should not rely on a vanity light fixture to illuminate the entire bathroom. All areas need to be properly lit, both for style and safety.

If you’re considering any of the design trends mentioned, or have another vision you’d like to discuss, we’d be happy to help you get the home of your dreams.
